Before talking about Nigari, let’s talk about sushi in general. Sushi is one of the most popular dishes of Japanese cuisine. It refers to a particular way of preparing rice.
That’s why nigari Sushi is the most popular and delicious sushi variety in Japan. The rice has a hand-pressing to a cylindrical shape. It should not be too compact or too loose; just enough so that it doesn’t break when you pick it up but it does melt in your mouth without effort.
Therefore, nigari is the most common way to prepare sushi and, almost certainly, is the most common in the world along with maki. However, over time, the term has come to refer generically to the set of recipes that combine rice with raw fish, in all its forms of preparation.
PREPARATION OF YOUR SUSHI NIGARI
First of all, we have prepared the sushi rice (good tip that one). The main trick to getting good rice is to clean the grain well before cooking it. Mix it later with a vinegar-based sushi preparation and let it cool. From here, we can make different types of sushi.
In addition, you can have the nigari by molding a ball of rice by hand. This, until we get a cylinder the size of the inside of the palm. Its consistency should not be so dense that it is difficult to eat. On the other hand, not so light as to break when caught.
As for rice, you can put a thin strip of raw fish, such as tuna. Also, salmon, butterfish or eel -among other products. You can grab it with the hand to eat and it is traditional to dip the rice part in soy sauce. Sometimes a bit of wasabi is put between the rice and the fish.
However, you can cover it with a thin portion of fish, salmon, tuna, carabiner, and eel. You can have them with chopsticks or by hand and only the part of the fish is soaked in soy sauce.
They are eaten in a single bite and “face up” with the rice towards the top so that the fish touches the tongue. The soy sauce will make the rice disarm.
TYPES OF NIGARI SUSHI
There is a special type of nigari, the gunkanmaki, which consists of a nigari wrapped in nori seaweed as if it were a boat. Moreover, you can make this if the ingredients on the rice are roe.
Also, if they are oysters or other foods with broth or that need some support. Don’t confuse this dish with the occasional decoration of nori seaweed with which you finish packing some type of nigari, like the omelet.
The label tells us that you can eat it in one bite and always with the fish strip down. Be careful not to let the rice absorb too much soy or it will fall apart in your hands. Needless to say that if we take the nigari with the chopsticks it is possible that we dismantle it.
This type of sushi is very popular among users. Therefore, what you should do is practice the preparation procedure.
Accompany it with the beverage of your choice (we recommend sake) and most importantly, innovate with every aspect of your preparation and combine it as you want.
