What sushi burrito is about
The idea is simple. We take a sushi maki and we put steroids so that it grows until it reaches the typical size of a burrito at the same time that we add more ingredients at the same time that it would support a normal piece.
This dish was born in a restaurant in San Francisco (United States) when Peter Yen wanted to eat sushi but did not have enough time to sit and enjoy it. That was when he set out to create a more convenient way to eat this famous Japanese dish and the hybrid of sushi and burrito was born.
Seen the result it is impossible not to think about the temaki, although the idea behind the sushirrito is to bring the sushi to the level of convenience of the burritos.
Hence, the same flavors and ingredients are maintained and only given a larger format (it is a single dish), convenient (wrapped to carry and can be eaten standing) and easy to prepare.
To prepare a sushi burrito (or sushirrito) you will need:
- Half avocado.
- 120 g of fresh salmon.
- 2 sheets of nori seaweed.
- 90 g of rice for sushi.
- 9 ml of vinegar for sushi.
- 10 g of carrot.
- 10 g of red cabbage
- 1 leaf of oak lettuce.
- 1/4 onion
- Soy sauce.
- Olive oil.
- Sherry vinegar.
- 1 spoonful of old-fashioned mustard.
- Salt and sugar.
Preparing a sushi burrito
Preparing a sushirrito is quite similar to making some maki (the only difference is the amount). In addition to all the food, we will need a sushi mat and a little plastic film. To start preparing this hybrid of sushi and burrito we are going to cut the salmon into small cubes. Next, we will prepare a vinaigrette by pouring 1 tablespoon of olive oil, 1 teaspoon of soy sauce, 1 teaspoon of sherry vinegar and 1 teaspoon of old-fashioned mustard in a pot. You can also add some sesame seeds if you want.
After closing it, shake it to mix well, add it to the salmon and let it rest for at least 45 minutes.
While the salmon rests in the fridge it is time to cook the sushi rice. This is something that we have already explained to you but I remember it. The first thing is to wash the rice with cold water repeatedly (until it comes out clean) to eliminate all the possible starch. The best way is to help you from a strainer.
Now to mix all the sushi burrito
Then add it to the pan, add 135 ml of water (we have to throw 1.5 times the weight of rice in water) and put the lid. We put the fire to the maximum during about 3 minutes until it starts to boil. Afterwards, we lower it to the minimum and let the rice cook for 10 minutes. All without lifting the lid. When the water has disappeared, remove it from the heat and let it rest for 5 minutes.
To finish with the rice, it is only left to throw it on a wide surface or a hangiri, add the vinegar for sushi and stir. With sushi and salmon ready, it’s time to assemble the sushirrito. The first thing is to prepare the rest of condiments. First cut the red cabbage and carrot into strips and then crush the avocado and mix it with chopped onion.
Next, we place the sushi mat, cover it with plastic film and place the nori seaweed. Then we put a layer of rice, a leaf of lettuce and then the rest of the ingredients: salmon, carrot, red cabbage and avocado.
To finish preparing a sushirrito just close it. For this, we stick a nori seaweed to the one we have used with the help of a little water and proceed to close it. Ideally, it should be as compact as possible, so it is best to use the mat.
If you see that it is a bit loose, wrap the sushirrito with plastic film and let it sit inside for a few minutes. If you’re ready to go on stage, wrap it in baking paper and you’re done. Like all sushi recipes, the sushi burrito filling can vary in the same way as a maki or temaki. I have opted for salmon, avocado, onion, red cabbage and carrot, but there are all kinds of alternatives. You just have to keep the nori seaweed and the rice.
